Every IICTN programme also begins with a shared six-part professional standards module covering professional ethics, personal and centre hygiene, sterilisation and sanitation, hygiene and bacteriology, AIDS and hepatitis awareness, and client handling and people skills. Taught by expert MD and MS qualified faculty.

What the course covers – 12 units of training

These are the 12 areas of practical and theory training covered in this programme, with what each one includes.

• Prepare and Maintain the Work Area – Setting up the styling station, sterilising combs, brushes, scissors and clippers, storing and handling products correctly, segregating waste and keeping client records.
• Shampoo and Condition the Hair and Scalp – Hair and scalp structure, hair types and common hair defects, choosing the right shampoo and conditioner for each, and recognising when a service should not go ahead.
• Blow-drying – What heat and tension actually do to the hair shaft, sectioning, brush and nozzle choice, and finishing a blow-dry so the shape holds.
• Indian Head Massage and Hair Spa Services – Scalp massage techniques and the order they are worked in, oils and spa treatments, and the conditions that make a massage unsuitable.
• Cutting Hair – Straight, V, U and layered cuts using scissors-over-comb, clipper-over-comb, freehand, thinning, texturising, disconnecting, razor cutting, graduation, tapering, point cutting and fading, with tapered, round and square necklines.
• Hair Styling and Dressing – Setting, finishing and dressing hair for an occasion using rollers, tongs, irons and pins, and building a style that suits the face shape and the event.
• Colouring and Lightening – Colour theory applied to hair, choosing and mixing product, patch and strand testing, applying tint and lightener, and correcting a colour that has gone wrong.
• Perming and Neutralising – The chemistry behind a perm, the pH scale, how temperature affects processing, sectioning and winding, neutralising, and post-perm conditioning.
• Relaxing and Straightening – Protecting the scalp before a relaxer, the tests taken before and after the service, applying relaxer safely, and caring for chemically straightened hair.
• Maintain Health and Safety at the Workplace – Hygiene and infection control, personal protective equipment, safe handling of products and electrical tools, waste disposal, and basic first aid and emergency procedure.
• Create a Positive Impression at the Workplace – Professional appearance and conduct, punctuality, communication with clients and colleagues, and working to the standards a salon expects.
• Shaving Services – An optional unit - open blade razors with disposable blades, brushes and sponges, and full shaves, partial shaves and beard outlines carried out hygienically.
